Het Iyakoko Patea Choir uit Mimika, Papua (Indonesië), werd opgericht in 2006 en groeide uit tot een van de meest opvallende en authentieke koren van de regio. Onder leiding van dirigent Choky Simanjuntak brengt het ensemble een unieke combinatie van klassieke koormuziek, Indonesisch repertoire en traditionele Papoea-folklore. Het koor bestaat uit 30 tot 50 zangers, afkomstig uit de lokale gemeenschap en uit families van werknemers van de mijnstad Kuala Kencana.
Wat het Iyakoko Patea Choir bijzonder maakt, is de manier waarop het koor culturele expressie en muzikale kwaliteit samenbrengt. Hun optredens zijn intens visueel, met traditionele kostuums, bodypaint, rituele bewegingen en percussie die de rijke cultuur van de Amungme- en Kamoro-volkeren tot leven brengen. Tegelijkertijd beheersen ze een breed klassiek repertoire, variërend van Rachmaninov tot hedendaagse componisten, waardoor ze zowel in folklore- als in klassieke categorieën sterk presteren.
Het koor trad op tijdens internationale festivals en wedstrijden in onder meer Riga, Tshwane, Singapore, Australië, Manado en Riva del Garda. Ze behaalden prijzen op de World Choir Games en op diverse Aziatische competities, en worden regelmatig uitgenodigd als culturele ambassadeurs van Papua. Hun optredens worden geprezen om hun energie, ritmische kracht, vocale intensiteit en de authentieke manier waarop ze de Papoeacultuur wereldwijd uitdragen.
