Iyakoko Patea Choir
Mimika
Indonesia

The Iyakoko Patea Choir, based in Mimika, Papua (Indonesia), was founded in 2006 and has since grown into one of the region’s most distinctive and culturally expressive vocal ensembles. Under the artistic direction of Choky Simanjuntak, the choir brings together 30 to 50 singers from the local community and from families connected to the mining town of Kuala Kencana.
The ensemble is known for its unique artistic identity, blending classical choral repertoire with authentic Papuan folklore. Their performances are visually striking, featuring traditional costumes, body paint, ritual movement, and percussion that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Amungme and Kamoro peoples. Alongside this strong cultural expression, the choir also performs a wide range of classical works—from Rachmaninov to contemporary composers—allowing them to excel in both folklore and classical competition categories.
The Iyakoko Patea Choir has performed at international festivals and competitions in Riga, Tshwane, Singapore, Australia, Manado, and Riva del Garda. They have earned recognition at the World Choir Games and at several major Asian competitions, and they are frequently invited to represent Papua as cultural ambassadors. Their performances are praised for their energy, rhythmic power, vocal intensity, and the authentic way in which they bring Papuan culture to audiences around the world.
With its combination of artistic quality, cultural identity, and strong stage presence, the Iyakoko Patea Choir is a remarkable ensemble that leaves a lasting impression in both competitive and gala settings.
